Friday, May 11, I had a night off so I travelled to Helena, Arkansas, the town where I was born and raised. It is the town located in the Arkansas Delta area that gave birth to the careers of many of the great blues musicians, past and present, country musicians, as well as famous rock and roll stars, including Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, etc. The list goes on and on. It was the weekend of the the 2nd Annual Arkansas Rockabilly Festival and what a treat it was to see some of the artists that made rockabilly a household name in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Rockabilly has become very popular in Europe and is making a comeback in the United States.
First on the list was a nostalgic drive through town and the old neighborhoods where my buddies and I used to hang out together. It brought back many memories, most of them good ones. Lol There were some sad thoughts when I discovered that many of the old landmarks have either been destroyed or changed to accommodate the changing times. A drive out to the Isle of Capri on the Lulu, Mississippi side of the bridge found many new additions to the casino where I had played many years ago. New buildings have been built and a second stage has been added. A walk over to the new stage found the Rockabilly stars who had come into town for the festival. Many were performing a good old down home jam session. First on stage was Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers, featuring Jim Aldridge on sax, harmonica and vocals, with the addition of the lead guitar player for Reba Russell's band. Soon, Jerry Kattawar, piano player from Memphis, joined them on stage, and played several of the great Jerry Lee Lewis hits. He was followed by the great Ace Cannon, who can still make that sax talk like no other. C. W. Gatlin, one of my early mentors, joined them, as well, and it was sure good to see him. Later, Charlie Rich Jr, joined them onstage and sang several of his late father's hits. There were also a few of the local great Helena musicians that joined them. There was so much talent on that stage that night, the place was rockin'. What a special night to have witnessed several of the greats all together for a moment in time.
Saturday, May 12th, was the 2nd annual Arkansas Delta Rockabilly Festival in Historic Downtown Helena. On the lineup was Brandon Cunning and the Stunning Cunning Band, originally from Pennsylvania, now located in Memphis. The infamous C. W. Gatlin and band, Reba Russell Band, Charlie Rich Jr., Stan Perkins and D. J. Fontana, Ace Cannon and Band, Travis Wammack and J. M. Van Eaton, Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers, Asleep at the Wheel and the Kentucky Headhunters capped the days event. Clyde Watson, a family friend, was inducted into the Arkansas Rockabilly Hall of Fame for 2012. I hope that many of you will place this event on your next year's calendar to attend this festival. Be sure and visit the Delta Cultural Center located at 141 Cherry Street, Helena, AR. There are numerous displays that spell out the various blues and rockabilly artists from that area and the major roles that they have played in the development of the sounds called the blues and rockabilly.
"People walked in rhythm and talked this singsong talk, when I'd go down by the river in Helena, the river seemed to be in rhythm, and I thought, no wonder the music comes from here, the rhythm is already there." - quote by Robbie Robertson. I think this quote says it all.
The East End Band and I will be playing at the Warren Country Club, Warren, AR on Friday, June 1st. The East End Band features Dusty Shelton, keyboards and vocals; Rusty Marshall, guitar and vocals; Jim Moore, bass Guitar and vocals; East End Eddie Rabb, drums; as well as myself, guitar and vocals. We look forward to seeing all of our friends in the Warren area.
Saturday, June 9th, our acoustic trio will be playing at Saddlebags, Albert Pike Road, Hot Springs. This is a place with great service and fun atmosphere.
Friday, June 15th, our acoustic trio consisting of East End Eddie Rabb, Juiceharp Jay Sawyer and me will be performing at Spanky's, Warren, AR. We are looking forward to seeing all of you out there.
Saturday, June 16th, our trio will be rockin' the house down at The Office, 109 S. Main Street, Dumas, AR, from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Great place to hang out and have fun.
Come on out and join me at Jason's, 141 Amity Road, Hot Springs, Wednesday nights at 6 p.m. where I play a solo acoustic show. Crawfish is currently on the menu and the party starts at 6:00 p.m. Great food, great service and a lot of fun.
