“Delta” Donnie Mathis was born in Helena, Arkansas and grew up with the Delta musical influence. “Delta” Donnie’s music encompasses many genres of music: country – old and new, Southern Rock, classic rock and roll, with a little bit of blues thrown in the mix. His musical genre versatility is one of the reasons his music appeals to a large variety of audiences. His deep, rich, melodic voice has captivated audiences for many years. Many musicians are just that, musicians, but “Delta” Donnie and his group are entertainers in that they interact and connect with their audiences. Audiences tend to stay until the last note is played.
He was raised in a musical family and, notably, Mack Self, a cousin. Mack was a well-known singer, songwriter, Sun recording artist, and a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Donnie’s family and mentors (C.W. Gatlin was one) were a big influence on his music. Other influences include Elvis Presley and Southern Rock artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and Travis Tritt. “Delta” Donnie was captivated by the sound of Delta music early in his life. He describes it as a combination of Honky Tonk, Country Rock, Blues and Rockabilly. The sound was unique and was played in the beer joints and honky tonks up and down the river in the delta.
Merle Haggard was and continues to be a huge musical influence in “Delta” Donnie’s music. Merle’s songs tend to always tell a story that most everyday, working folks can relate to. “Delta” Donnie says you can never go wrong with three chords and a story.
“Delta” Donnie plays a solo acoustic show as well as a duo, trio, quartet or a six-piece band, dependent on the event.
He is currently living in Monticello, Arkansas, and now plays venues mainly in Hot Springs, South Central and Southeast, Arkansas. However, he has in the past played in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and will continue to play in other states, as requested.
